Often called the capitol's "reverse rotunda," it is patterned after the rotunda in the Capitol and has the same diameter, 60 feet. The design on the floor mirrors the Capitol rotunda ceiling. Bronze letters spell out the word "TEXAS," and surround a star which also functions as a drain. The Capitol Extension itself, located on the north side of the statehouse, is a four-level underground structure which was completed in 1993. It was built to provide the Capitol with additional space without detracting from its appearance and historical importance. It is connected to the Capitol by three pedestrian tunnels.
